SAFE AND HEALTHY SCHOOLS

Our Safe and Healthy Schools program helps connect educators and students with the resources they need to succeed and thrive.

We organize events to create safe spaces for students, including the Wyoming Equality Youth Camp and the Civic Engagement Day. We are also a leading partner in the GSA Day of the Shepard Symposium on Social Justice. These events are important opportunities to learn resiliency and civic engagement while broadening communities.

HISTORY

The Safe and Healthy Schools Network started in 2017 under the GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) Network. The program aimed to encourage LGBTQ and allied students to foster safer and more inclusive environments.

Our approach to this goal was to connect clubs focused on LGBTQ+ youth, Anti-Bullying, Suicide Prevention, Diversity and Inclusion, and Leadership across Wyoming. Many of our clubs were isolated; we wanted to connect them so they could learn from each other and engage in regional and statewide leadership development programs. When the Network was started, we were only connected with six clubs; after five years, we have around 30 clubs across the state in cities with a populations from 200 to 30,000.

As we continue to grow our network, we have expanded our focus to include teachers, administrators, parents, and school board members. While simultaneously expanding our partnerships with local organizations, businesses, and advocates who want to support all students. Working together can create spaces for educators and students across the state to succeed and thrive.
