Catherine R. Connolly LGBTQ Scholarship
Since becoming a professor at the University of Wyoming in 1992 and an elected Representative to the Wyoming Legislature in 2008, Cathy Connolly has dedicated much of her career to advancing LGBTQ legislation and advocating for K-12 education in the State of Wyoming. Cathy is the first openly gay legislator in Wyoming, and has sponsored numerous pieces of legislation that work to improve the lives of LGBTQ people living in Wyoming, from marriage equality to non-discrimination. Cathy has been a face of the queer movement in Wyoming for decades – even appearing as a character in The Laramie Project, a play about the late Matthew Shepard that has been reproduced all over the world. Over the years, Cathy has mentored countless students both academically and professionally, always carrying with her a fierce passion for education and lifting up the generations that come after her. Wyoming Equality is proud to continue Cathy’s living legacy through supporting LGBTQ students in Wyoming, recognizing that the path to higher education can be filled with significant barriers for students with marginalized identities. It is our hope that scholarship recipients will continue their education keeping in mind the trailblazers, like Cathy, who have done the hard work in difficult places. With the many hats that she has worn over the years as Professor, Representative, and Community Advocate, Cathy Connolly reminds us all of the power we as LGBTQ people hold to be visible, positive forces of change in our communities.
Matthew Shepard Memorial Scholarship
In the film ‘Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine,’ friends describe Matthew as “someone who had big ideas, someone who was going to make a difference.” At Wyoming Equality, we wish to carry out this piece of Matthew’s legacy by encouraging LGBTQ students in Wyoming to make their dreams and ambitions a reality. The murder of Matthew Shepard reminds us that we have more work to do, and part of that work includes supporting LGBTQ students on their educational journeys.
Wind River Two-Spirit Scholarship
Wyoming Equality is excited to announce one of the state’s first Native American/Indigenous Two-Spirit scholarships! Both the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone tribes have played integral roles in the fight for equality and fairness in Wyoming. We hope to help support and uplift the voices of Two-Spirit/LGBTQ Native American students with this scholarship, and look forward to your application!
